Auxiliary Engine Crankcase Inspection.

Before starting with auxiliary engine crankcase inspection, the following must be done,
The stand by generator should be switched on.
The generator to be inspected should be cooled down.
Air starting valve closed.
Indicator cocks open.
Engage turning gear.
Generator should be put to manual and tagged "MEN AT WORK".
Tool box talk and Permit to work made and filed.
All tools kept ready.

After doing all the tasks above,

Open the crankcase door of all units.
Check the gaskets of all the door, check for any wear.
Check the colour of the lube oil.
Touch the lube oil and feel for the sludge content in it.
Check the underside of the liner with a flash light, for all units. The liner is checked for any scoring marks, or any cracks.
Check the play of the connecting rod with a bar.
Check the tightness of the connecting rod bolts.
Check the connecting rod bearing clearance.
Check the main bearing clearance.

  1. Some points I feel you missed out. These are upto my expertise unto this experience.

    1. There is no necessity to start standby gen if there is no load requirements. All the tools which are being readied must be taken account of.
    2. Tool box meeting should be the first to be done, along with the isolation permit and cold work permit. Also, RA should be made.
    3. Whats your Aux. Enigne's make? What model? Which year built?
    4. Standby gen should be selected accordingly with working one.
    5. Also at local, enigne should be switched to local control, if there's local aux. engine control panel.
    6. Pre-lub pump should be stopped 1 hour before.
    7. Permit should not be filed. It sohuld be kept at work place 1 copy and 1 more copy with officer-in-charge, usually kept at ECR.
    8. Set load limit setting to ZERO from whatever it was before.
    9. Measure crankshaft deflection.
    10. Finally before closing up, inspect for all the tools at hand and verify the log taken during prior inspection. Also check no rags were dropped into the sump.

    Thank you!!
    Keep up the good work!!!

  5. An accidents occurred in an Engine Room wherein broken Connecting Rod of Auxiliary Engine
has come out of Crankcase. You are appointed to find the root cause of the bodent. Mention the
direction in which you will proceed stating the reason for it. What records would like to refer?

    1. Could start with any such happenings in machinery history book, work done and PMS Records related to running hours of the Aux. Engine and accordingly Maintenance carried out related to con rod bearings, bolts their replacement techniques, tightening torques, type of spares used or reused. Parameters and monitoring analysis post maintanance. Corresponding crankcase inspections and their reports along with daily parameters in engineers log book.
